The 63rd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting, organised by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), is slated for January 22, 2024, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Under the leadership of Shri V.L. Kantha Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, the gathering will include notable figures such as Shri Sanjay Lohiya and Shri Janardan Prasad from GSI, along with representatives from various ministries, state directorates, PSUs, private mining industry, and stakeholders.
A key agenda item during the meeting involves the presentation of the Report on the Geological & Geotechnical investigation of Joshimath Township, Chamoli District, to the Uttarakhand Government. Additionally, the unveiling of the Mineral Map for Ladakh, a newly formed Union Territory, and other significant GSI publications will be featured.
The meeting's agenda encompasses a review of actions from the previous CGPB meeting (62nd) and discussions on new agenda items proposed by stakeholders. An integral part of the discussions will be the Field Season Proposals for GSI in 2024-25, consisting of 1055 scientific programs. Among these, 392 Mineral Development projects, showcasing potential auctionable mineral blocks, and 133 Mineral Discovery Projects will be highlighted. Emphasis will be placed on exploring strategic and critical minerals, with 188 projects targeting minerals such as REE, RM, Graphite, Lithium, Vanadium, and PGE - a significant 50% increase from the previous year.
Additionally, 111 projects focusing on Natural Hazard Studies/Public Good Geoscience, with societal benefits, will be undertaken. This includes collaborations with states, Disaster Management Authorities, universities, and various agencies. The post-lunch session will shine a spotlight on the recently launched National Geoscience Data Repository portal. This cloud-based platform aims to centralise pre-competitive baseline geological and mineral exploration data, ensuring accessibility across the mineral and mining sectors. An exhibition showcasing GSI activities will complement the meeting, making it a comprehensive forum addressing geological, geotechnical, and mineral exploration, reaffirming GSI's commitment to advancing scientific research and contributing to the sustainable development of India's mining sector.
