Green steel initiatives to gain policy and financial backing.

In a significant policy move, India’s Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has announced that the government is preparing to impose stricter measures on steel imports while actively encouraging Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to explore global acquisitions. Addressing media in New Delhi, Kumaraswamy emphasized the urgent need to curb cheap steel inflows that are impacting domestic producers and disrupting pricing equilibrium.

Kumaraswamy highlighted that the ministry is reviewing existing import regulations, with a proposal to impose higher safeguard duties or quality checks on specific product categories. This strategic action is aimed at protecting domestic manufacturers from price undercutting by foreign suppliers, particularly from China, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia.

In parallel, the government is backing global acquisition opportunities for PSUs like Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) to secure raw material assets and expand global footprints. Kumaraswamy also reiterated India’s ambitious push toward green steel-making, noting that incentives and policy reforms are underway to support decarbonization and circular economy initiatives within the industry.

The combined move to regulate imports, strengthen PSU assets abroad, and champion green steel aligns with India’s vision of becoming a resilient, sustainable steel powerhouse in the coming decade.
