Turkey's steel industry maintained its growth momentum during the first four months of 2026, with crude steel production rising 6.3% year-on-year to 13.04 million tonnes, according to the Turkish Steel Producers' Association (TCUD). In April alone, the country's crude steel output increased by 9.4% to 3.29 million tonnes, reflecting continued strength in domestic production and market activity.
Finished steel consumption also showed positive growth, increasing 12.0% year-on-year in April to 3.34 million tonnes, while January–April consumption reached 13.22 million tonnes, up 9.7% compared to the same period last year. The data indicates improving demand across key steel-consuming sectors.
However, Turkey's foreign trade performance remained mixed. Steel exports during the January–April period declined 3.3% to 4.79 million tonnes, while imports increased 6.3% to 5.93 million tonnes. As a result, the country's steel export-to-import ratio fell to 78.16%, highlighting ongoing pressure from global competition and trade barriers.Industry participants remain optimistic that rising domestic demand, expanding slab production, and continued investments in steelmaking capacity will support growth through the remainder of 2026. Nevertheless, export market conditions and import competition are expected to remain key challenges for Turkish producers.
