The UK government is examining options to retaliate against the European Union if Brussels goes ahead with higher tariffs on British steel exports, adding a fresh layer of tension to post-Brexit trade relations. According to people familiar with the matter, London is preparing contingency plans in case talks with the EU fail to defuse the dispute.

Officials are reportedly looking at ways to tweak the UK’s own steel safeguard regime, including changes to import quotas and duties on EU steel and related products. Any response would be calibrated to comply with World Trade Organization rules while signalling that the UK is ready to defend its industrial interests.

The EU’s move to tighten access for UK steel comes against the backdrop of broader global trade frictions and a fragile demand environment for the sector. British mills are already wrestling with high energy costs, decarbonisation pressures and volatile raw material prices, making access to EU customers a critical lifeline.

Analysts warn that an escalation into a tit-for-tat tariff battle could hurt producers on both sides by raising costs and injecting fresh uncertainty into supply chains. For now, industry stakeholders are closely watching whether the UK and EU can find a negotiated solution before countermeasures are triggered.
