Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has assured full support for the long-pending expansion of Steel Authority of India Ltd’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), giving a fresh push to plans to more than double capacity. In a high-level meeting with Union minister for heavy industries and steel H D Kumaraswamy in Bhubaneswar, both sides discussed fast-tracking the project, which aims to raise RSP’s capacity from 4.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 9.5 MTPA.

The expansion is expected to significantly strengthen Odisha’s industrial footprint and support India’s growing steel demand. However, land acquisition has been a key bottleneck. Kumaraswamy underlined that technical preparations are largely in place, but physical expansion cannot move ahead until land-related issues are resolved.

CM Majhi assured “complete cooperation” from the state government and directed senior officials to expedite land acquisition and related clearances. Officials from both central and state governments attended the meeting, highlighting the importance of inter-governmental coordination for the project’s success.

The discussion followed Kumaraswamy’s visit to Rourkela Steel Plant, where he reviewed current operations and readiness for expansion. With both governments now publicly aligned, the long-delayed RSP expansion is seen as back on track, with potential to boost regional development, employment and India’s overall steel capacity in the coming years.
