Fortescue is accelerating its Real Zero decarbonization strategy with major renewable energy investments in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The company has started construction of the 690 MW Turner River solar farm and a 650 MWh battery energy storage system at its Cloudbreak mine.

These projects are part of Fortescue’s Pilbara Green Grid, designed to power iron ore mining operations with low-carbon electricity. Once completed, Fortescue’s renewable generation capacity is expected to exceed 1.4 GW, supported by solar, battery storage, wind power and high-voltage transmission infrastructure.

The company is also expanding its electric mining fleet, including electric excavators, drills and battery-powered haul trucks. The move reflects the mining sector’s growing focus on cleaner energy, lower emissions and sustainable raw material production for the global steel industry.
