Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel have partnered to expand the use of low-carbon zinc in steel manufacturing, marking another step in India’s push toward cleaner industrial production. The collaboration will focus on testing and scaling EcoZen zinc across selected galvanising processes to lower embodied carbon in coated steel products. Hindustan Zinc will supply the low-carbon material and work with Tata Steel to adapt production lines, while Tata Steel will evaluate product performance, commercial feasibility, and market acceptance. The companies will also explore traceability features to strengthen confidence around material origin and carbon credentials. The move is significant for sectors such as infrastructure and automotive, where zinc-coated steel is widely used for corrosion protection. By combining mining, processing, and steelmaking expertise, the partnership aims to create demand for lower-carbon input materials and support broader decarbonisation efforts across heavy industry. Initial work is expected to begin with trials in domestic plants, with possible expansion into export supply chains depending on market response and approvals.
