Jindal Steel has taken a major step in India’s steel and energy story by integrating advanced coal gasification technology into its operations. Using syngas produced from domestic coal, the company is powering key steelmaking processes and reducing its reliance on imported fuels such as natural gas, LPG and propane. The move also helps the company maintain production during fuel supply disruptions while supporting a lower-carbon manufacturing pathway. Jindal said it has already established India’s first coal gasification-based DRI plant and has now extended syngas use to galvanising, colour coating line furnaces and blast furnace injection. The development strengthens the push for energy security, import substitution and cleaner industrial operations, while aligning with India’s National Coal Gasification Mission. For the steel industry, this marks an important shift toward technology-led efficiency and greater use of indigenous resources in large-scale manufacturing.
