Researchers from NIT Durgapur, Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Asansol, IIT Bombay and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad have begun a week-long Australia study tour under the India–Australia Minerals Scholar Network (IAMSN) to speed up green steel breakthroughs. The delegation is visiting universities and advanced laboratories, including CSIRO’s Clayton facilities, to align R&D on hydrogen-based ironmaking, AI-assisted process control and cleaner mineral value chains.

Backed by the Australian government and led by CSIRO, IAMSN is positioning itself as a flagship platform linking talent, policy and industry needs across both countries as steelmakers face mounting pressure to decarbonise. NIT Durgapur’s leadership says the partnership is moving from MoUs to measurable outcomes, with joint projects aimed at lowering emissions in one of the world’s most energy-intensive sectors.

Led by NIT Durgapur Director Prof Arvind Choubey, the team includes faculty and scholars focused on sustainable steelmaking, with one participant noted as the first India-based scholar selected by CSIRO under the network. The group also presented work at an iron-and-steel technology conference in Australia, boosting visibility and opening doors to collaborative pilots for next-generation low-carbon steel routes.
