Ukraine’s steel industry could face fresh pressure as the European Union moves ahead with new steel import restrictions. Interpipe CEO Luca Zanotti warned that applying separate tariff quotas on Ukrainian steel would hurt manufacturers already weakened by war, energy shortages and labour challenges.
According to the report, the EU had earlier granted Ukraine an exemption from steel quotas until June 2028, but the new trade measures may bring Ukrainian steel under tighter limits. Zanotti said Ukraine’s steel sector does not pose a threat to Europe and remains a key industrial engine for the country’s economy.
The move comes as the EU plans to raise steel import duties to 50% from July 1 while reducing duty-free import quotas, a step that could reshape steel trade flows across Europe.
