Türkiye’s steel industry is entering a decisive phase as the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and emerging green steel standards place fresh pressure on producers to cut emissions and prove sustainability with verified data.
At a recent industry session under the “Decarbonization of the Turkish Steel Industry” project, experts highlighted that the shift is no longer limited to crude steel producers. Energy, logistics, finance, public policy, procurement and steel-consuming sectors must all move together to support a cleaner steel value chain.
CBAM is expected to change how Turkish steel exporters compete in the EU market. Companies will now be judged by verified emissions data, while electric arc furnace-based mills may also face scrutiny due to indirect emissions from electricity use. Industry voices warned that financing remains a major challenge, as mills balance energy efficiency, renewable energy and material efficiency investments. The discussion also underlined uncertainty around EU green steel classifications, public procurement rules and future low-emission steel demand. For Türkiye, the message is clear: green transition is no longer optional but essential for protecting export strength and long-term competitiveness.
