A new ₹2,345-crore steel plant near Koppal, announced by Karnataka’s Industries Minister M B Patil, has sparked strong opposition from local residents. The project, to be developed by Mukand Sumi Special Steel Ltd (MSSSL)- a joint venture of Sumitomo Corporation and Mukand Steels—is planned at Kanakapura, about 13 km from Koppal.
While the state government has projected the plant as a boost to industrial growth and employment, locals fear it will worsen health and environmental problems already linked to existing industries in the region. Protesters allege that unchecked pollution has impacted community health and warn that the new factory could force families to relocate.
In recent days, villagers staged demonstrations and even burnt an effigy of the minister to express their anger. Many have also taken to social media to highlight their concerns. The opposition mirrors earlier resistance to the proposed Baldota steel project, where residents raised similar issues.
Activists argue that while industrial investments are important, the government must balance growth with public health and environmental safety, ensuring that community voices are not ignored in the development process.
