The Human Rights Forum (HRF) has strongly criticized the government’s fresh efforts to privatize the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). The Forum expressed serious concerns over the invitation of Expressions of Interest (EoI) for outsourcing 34 core departments, including blast furnaces, slag granulation, mines, and water systems.
HRF called the move a systematic attempt to dismantle the public-sector identity of VSP and hand over vital operations to private entities under the guise of outsourcing. The organization warned that such actions not only endanger worker safety especially in hazardous departments but also sideline labor laws and dilute accountability.
Labeling the initiative as a “form of plunder,” HRF highlighted the dangers of unregulated privatization, where profits take precedence over public interest. The Forum demanded a complete rollback of the privatization process, reinstatement of affected workers, and meaningful dialogue with employee unions.
HRF also urged both the central and Andhra Pradesh governments to affirm their commitment to keeping VSP under public ownership, emphasizing the plant’s strategic and economic significance to the region.
