The Malaysian government has announced anti-dumping duties on certain flat steel products imported from Vietnam, South Korea, and Japan. This move aims to safeguard the local steel manufacturing industry from cheap imports sold at unfairly low prices.
According to Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), investigations confirmed that imports from these countries were undercutting local market prices, causing material injury to domestic producers.
The duties will apply specifically to cold-rolled and hot-rolled flat steel products — widely used in automotive, construction, and home appliances sectors. These measures will remain in force for the next 5 years, offering a breather to local mills and producers.
Industry experts believe this move could reshape export strategies for Vietnam, Japan, and South Korea, while potentially affecting steel prices within Malaysia in the coming months.
