Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), a major step towards boosting India's capabilities in critical minerals. The aim of this collaboration is to strengthen technical and knowledge cooperation in the area of critical minerals, which is essential to the development of the country's mining sector.

The MoU was signed by Sadashiv Samantaray, Director (Commercial) of NALCO and CEO, KABIL, along with Dr Ramanuj Narayan, Director of CSIR-IMMT, at the NALCO Corporate Office in Bhubaneswar. Sridhar Patra, CMD, NALCO and Chairman, KABIL, presided over the ceremony, marking a significant step forward in the exploration and development of critical minerals in India.

Under this MoU, KABIL will draw on the technical expertise and services of CSIR-IMMT for undertaking various projects. These projects include the design and analysis of metallurgical test work-plans, development and review of process flowsheets, and the selection of process technologies for mineral processing, beneficiation, and metal extraction. This agreement also sets the stage for joint research initiatives and the exchange of scientific information between the two organisations.

Sridhar Patra expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, "This collaboration with CSIR-IMMT will foster the thriving environment necessary for the exploration of critical minerals, which are essential to the growth and sustainability of the Indian mining industry." He further emphasized that advancing scientific research and technology development in the mineral and metallurgical sectors is vital for ensuring mineral security of the nation and meeting domestic requirements.

KABIL, a joint venture company formed by three Indian public sector undertakings - National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), and Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL) - operates under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. Its mandate is to identify, explore, acquire, develop, mine, process, and procure critical and strategic minerals. This endeavor aims at supply side assurance and securing mineral security of the nation, further supporting the "Make in India" initiative.
