The Puducherry Government is working to boost renewable energy by installing rooftop solar panels on residential buildings. Currently, 38 government buildings have solar panels, and the goal is to reach 225 MW of renewable energy capacity by December 2026.

Between January and December 2024, the government plans to install solar panels on 50,000 residential households. This complements installations on government and other buildings, focusing on solar technology to increase reliance on renewable energy.

Puducherry currently has 48 MW of solar capacity, covering various buildings. The government aims to tap into the potential of around 2 lakh residential buildings, with a target capacity of 225 MW by December 2026. This would meet 73% of the total peak demand (540 MW) in the Union Territory.

To speed up the process, 38 government buildings already have rooftop solar plants, and 852 more government buildings will be identified for installations using the RESCO model by December 2025.

To support these efforts, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy increased subsidies for rooftop solar plants. The subsidy is now ₹18,000 per KW for plants up to 3 KW and ₹9,000 per KW for plants above 3 KW and up to 10 KW.

A 3 KW rooftop solar plant can generate 400 units of energy monthly. Excess energy can be transferred to the Electricity Department to offset bills. Overall, this initiative aims to make Puducherry more sustainable by promoting widespread adoption of rooftop solar panels and significantly increasing renewable energy capacity.
