India's coal-based power generation displayed a notable growth of 10% from April to December 2023 compared to the same period the previous year, contributing to the overall 7% increase in power generation. Domestic coal-based power generation reached 872 billion units, marking a 7% rise from the corresponding period last year, ensuring ample energy supply to meet escalating demand. Despite surging power needs, coal import for blending decreased significantly by 41% to 17 MT during April - December 2023, showcasing the country's commitment to self-reliance in coal production.
In India, power generation relies heavily on coal, constituting over 70% of the total output, while conventional and renewable sources also contribute. The coal-based power sector is pivotal in addressing the surging energy demands fueled by industrial growth, technological advancements, population increase, and economic development. The government remains dedicated to boosting coal production, aiming to enhance availability and reduce reliance on imported coal to safeguard foreign reserves.
