Steel prices for MSMEs to match export rates.

Move aims to boost domestic manufacturing competitiveness.

Transparent monitoring system in development.

India’s steel ministry is moving to level the playing field for domestic Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by ensuring they receive steel at export parity prices. The move comes amid concerns that MSMEs, vital contributors to India’s manufacturing ecosystem, have been struggling with rising input costs while large export orders enjoy preferential pricing.

According to officials, leading steel manufacturers including Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and Jindal Steel & Power have been engaged in discussions with the government to implement a pricing mechanism where MSMEs will get steel at the same rates offered to overseas buyers.

The Steel Users Federation of India (SUFI) welcomed the decision, calling it a "timely intervention" that will help restore competitiveness for domestic businesses in sectors like engineering goods, auto components, and infrastructure.

Key reasons driving this move:

  • Persistent complaints from MSMEs about price disparities compared to export contracts.

  • The government’s aim to boost domestic production and job creation under its Make in India initiative.

  • An effort to counter the inflow of cheaper steel from countries like China amid tariff uncertainties.

The implementation framework is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, with provisions for a transparent pricing dashboard and quarterly reviews.
