Project faces local and environmental opposition.
Final call will weigh jobs vs ecology.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that the state government will make a decision regarding the proposed Baldota steel plant in Koppal after reviewing a detailed report from the district's Deputy Commissioner (DC). The ₹54,000 crore project by the Baldota Group has faced local opposition due to environmental concerns.
Speaking to the media in Hosapete, Vijayanagar district, CM Siddaramaiah stated that the DC has been instructed to submit a comprehensive assessment addressing compliance with regulations and potential environmental impacts. The government will base its decision on the findings of this report.
The Baldota Group's greenfield steel project aims for a production capacity of 10.5 million tonnes per annum and promises to create approximately 15,000 jobs. However, the project has been met with resistance from local communities and environmental groups concerned about pollution and ecological impact.
In March, following protests and a memorandum from local leaders, the CM directed the Koppal district administration to halt preparatory work on the plant. Despite this, reports indicated that construction activities continued, leading to further demonstrations and demands for administrative accountability.
