PNGRB chairperson updates Chandigarh governor on natural gas progress

Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), met with Banwarilal Purohit, Administrator of the UT of Chandigarh and Governor of Punjab, on January 19, 2024, in Chandigarh. The meeting aimed to discuss the progress of Oil & Gas Infrastructure in Chandigarh and PNGRB's efforts to fulfil the Prime Minister’s vision of increasing the share of Natural Gas to 15% in India’s energy mix.

During the meeting, the Chairperson briefed the Governor on the advancements in promoting natural gas in both Chandigarh and Punjab. Key topics included the environmental benefits of using piped natural gas in cooking and compressed natural gas (CNG) in transport. Important issues such as substituting polluting fuels in industrial and commercial units, rationalising land restoration charges, and addressing VAT on CNG were also discussed.

Dr Anil Jain highlighted the goal of providing "HarGhar PNG" by March 2025 with the support of the UT Administration, aligning with Chandigarh's reputation as a clean and green city. The Governor expressed appreciation for the efforts and pledged full support for the development of natural gas infrastructure in Chandigarh.

On the sidelines, Dr. Anil Jain also met with Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Home Secretary, and Adviser to Administrator, and Commissioner, MC, Chandigarh. Discussions focused on promoting natural gas in domestic, transport, industrial, and commercial sectors. The Home Secretary assured full support from the UT Administration for these initiatives.

PNGRB has authorised 300 Geographical Areas covering 98% of the population and 88% of the area for the development of City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks. The board aims to provide 13 cr domestic PNG connections, establish 17,751 CNG stations, and lay 5,42,224 inch-km pipelines by 2032. As of November 30, 2023, 1 cr domestic PNG connections and 6,159 CNG stations have been established nationwide.
