The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, helmed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has greenlit the construction of a 4.56 km long, 6-lane High-Level/Extra Dosed Cable Stayed Bridge across River Ganga. This monumental project aims to connect Digha and Sonepur in Bihar, poised to transform transportation and spur economic growth in the region.
The project's total cost amounts to ₹ 3,064.45 crore, encompassing a civil construction cost of ₹ 2,233.81 crore. The bridge is projected to expedite traffic movement, particularly benefitting North Bihar's overall development.
Currently, Digha and Sonepur are linked by a Rail Cum Road Bridge, restricting the transportation of goods and commodities due to inherent constraints. The new bridge seeks to alleviate this blockade, facilitating the seamless movement of goods and unlocking the economic potential of the region.
This infrastructure marvel will establish direct connectivity from Patna to the Golden Quadrilateral corridor via NH-139 at Aurangabad and Sonepur (NH-31). It will enhance accessibility to prominent regions such as Chhapra, Motihari, and Bettiah in Northern Bihar. Moreover, it is a crucial component of the Buddha circuit, fostering connectivity to significant sites like the Buddha Stupa at Vaishali, Keshariya, Areraj Someshwar Nath Temple, and the proposed Viraat Ramayan Mandir.
The project, scheduled for completion in 42 months, will leverage cutting-edge technologies like 5D-Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) to ensure construction and operational quality. Beyond reducing travel time and distance, this initiative is expected to stimulate socio-economic growth by generating employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers during the construction and maintenance phases.
This ambitious endeavour aims to bridge the connectivity gap between North and South Bihar, heralding holistic growth and serving as a catalyst for the region's socio-economic advancement.
