As of August 1, 2025, the United Kingdom has resumed duty-free exports of select steel products to the European Union under a revised tariff-rate quota (TRQ) system. The EU’s updated import quota framework allows specified volumes of steel from the UK to enter without triggering tariffs. Once these quotas are filled, standard safeguard duties will apply. The move aligns with ongoing EU efforts to recalibrate trade protections while maintaining fair competition.
Key products covered under the duty-free scheme include hot-rolled flat steel, coated steel, and some long products. The measure is expected to improve order books for UK producers, especially those previously burdened by 25% duties on out-of-quota shipments.
Industry leaders have welcomed the move, citing its importance for maintaining cross-channel steel supply chains and stabilizing market access. However, they caution that quota limits remain tight and may require ongoing renegotiation as demand fluctuates.
