Union Pacific deal fuels rail steel growth India and Russia discuss stronger steel industry cooperation in New Delhi Tighter supply pushes slab prices higher Ukraine steel under pressure from CBAM
Marcegaglia and Danieli have joined hands for a major low-carbon steelmaking project in Fos-sur-Mer, France, marking a strong step toward cleaner steel production in Europe. The proposed facility will feature a modern electric arc furnace, a single-strand continuous caster for thick slabs, and a conventional hot-strip mill.
Once operational, the plant is expected to produce more than 2 million tonnes of liquid steel annually and up to 3 million tonnes of hot-rolled stainless and carbon steel coils. This output could cover nearly 35% of Marcegaglia’s total coil and slab requirements, strengthening its supply chain and production flexibility.
The project stands out for its sustainability focus. By using scrap, low-carbon hot briquetted iron, and a mix of nuclear and renewable energy, the new plant could cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional steelmaking methods. Advanced automation, efficient resource use, and compliance with European environmental and safety standards further boost the project’s appeal. The final investment decision is expected by the end of 2026, subject to permits and regulatory approvals. For the steel industry, this development signals growing momentum behind green steel, cleaner technologies, and future-ready flat steel production.
