Tata Steel UK has commenced construction of a new 1.8 million tonne pickling line at its Port Talbot facility in Wales, marking a major step in its £1.25 billion low-carbon steel investment plan.
The new line will replace outdated infrastructure and enable the processing of advanced steel grades used in automotive and construction sectors. Without this upgrade, the plant’s ability to serve key customers and maintain production efficiency would be significantly limited.
Work on dismantling old systems has already begun, with full commissioning of the new line expected by April 2026. Tata Steel has partnered with Clecim and ABB Limited for technology and equipment supply, creating around 250 jobs during the construction phase.
The project underscores Tata Steel’s commitment to modernising UK steelmaking, enhancing sustainability, and supporting the country’s green industrial transition.
