Tata Steel Targets 10–15 Million Tonnes of Green Steel via Recycling by 2040
Tata Steel is charting a sustainable future with plans to produce 10 to 15 million tonnes of steel through recycling over the next 10 to 15 years. This initiative is part of the company's strategy to shift from traditional linear production methods to a circular economy model.
The company is ramping up its use of electric arc furnaces (EAF), a low-carbon alternative to blast furnaces. In India, Tata Steel has already established a recycling plant near Delhi and plans to operationalize a 0.75 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) plant in Ludhiana by FY 2026. The goal is to expand Indian production capacity to 40 Mt by 2030.
In Europe, Tata Steel is transitioning its Port Talbot operations in South Wales to a 3 Mtpa EAF facility, aiming to phase out all blast furnaces by 2035. Its Netherlands plant in IJmuiden produced approximately 6.75 Mt of liquid steel in FY 2025 and is also moving toward greener operations.
This shift aligns with Tata Steel’s broader goal to embed sustainability and circularity across its global operations, significantly reducing its carbon footprint while meeting growing demand.
