Steel Minister Kumaraswamy Backs Green Growth at Salem Steel Plant
Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy recently visited SAIL’s Salem Steel Plant, emphasizing the importance of sustainable steel production and innovation. During his tour, he reviewed key operations and engaged with plant officials and workers.
The minister highlighted the need to integrate renewable energy sources like solar and wind into steel manufacturing. This aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070. He stressed that adopting green technologies would not only reduce environmental impact but also improve operational efficiency.
Kumaraswamy also called for the expansion of specialty steel production, especially for sectors like defense, aerospace, and infrastructure. He noted that improving capacity utilization and modernizing plant technology is essential for meeting the national steel output target of 300 million tonnes by 2030.
In meetings with SAIL leadership and labor representatives, the minister discussed ways to enhance productivity, profitability, and product quality. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to making India a global leader in sustainable steel production.
The visit marks a significant step in aligning India’s steel sector with environmental and industrial goals, reinforcing steel’s role as a driver of national development.
