Odisha’s long-delayed Dhinkia steel project is finally set for inauguration after nearly 21 years of protests, legal disputes, and environmental opposition. The integrated steel plant, being developed by JSW Steel on the former POSCO project site near Paradip, represents an investment of around ₹65,000 crore with a planned production capacity of 13.2 million tonnes per annum.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is expected to inaugurate the project alongside Sajjan Jindal. The event will also include foundation stone ceremonies for key units such as the blast furnace, coke oven, sinter plant, and steel melting shop.
The site was originally allocated to POSCO in 2005 for a mega steel plant project, but strong resistance from villagers and environmental groups stalled development for over a decade. Protesters had raised concerns regarding land acquisition, displacement, environmental damage, and loss of livelihoods. Officials say the new project will include captive power facilities, cargo-handling infrastructure, and large-scale industrial support systems, positioning Odisha as a major steel manufacturing hub in India.
