The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied special-grade, high-strength steel for the construction of advanced warships and submarines, reinforcing the Indian Navy’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The indigenous steel, developed in collaboration with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) under DRDO, and Indian Navy, has been used in building stealth frigates, aircraft carriers, and submarines replacing earlier imports from Russia and Europe.
This special-grade steel is designed to withstand extreme marine and combat conditions, offering high resistance to corrosion and superior weldability. It marks a major step towards achieving ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in critical defence materials.
SAIL has been a key contributor to India’s naval projects, including INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, and various frontline warships under construction.
Company officials stated that consistent innovation, quality enhancement, and close coordination with defence agencies have enabled SAIL to meet stringent naval requirements. The initiative reflects India’s growing capability to produce high-end alloys domestically, a move that strengthens both national security and the country’s metallurgical expertise.
