SAIL Supplies Special-Grade Steel for INS Ajay and INS Nistar

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied special-grade DMR steel plates for two major Indian Navy vessels INS Ajay and INS Nistar marking a key contribution to India's defence indigenisation efforts.

INS Ajay, the final vessel in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series, was launched in July 2025 by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE). Built entirely with SAIL’s DMR-grade steel, the vessel is designed for stealth and structural durability, strengthening India’s coastal defence capabilities.

INS Nistar, commissioned on July 18, 2025, is India’s first indigenously designed and constructed Diving Support Vessel (DSV). Built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, INS Nistar plays a vital role in submarine rescue operations and deep-sea missions. The entire requirement of special steel plates for this vessel was also met by SAIL.

Both vessels highlight the growing emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. SAIL’s specialized steel not only ensures operational efficiency but also reduces the need for imports, making the supply chain more resilient.

With this achievement, SAIL reaffirms its position as a critical partner in India’s naval modernization. The successful deployment of DMR-grade steel in complex marine platforms showcases the company’s technological capabilities and commitment to national security.
