MECON, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel, has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to interested partners for pilot projects involving hydrogen injection in sponge iron facilities and blast furnaces. The Ministry of Steel stated that the action is intended to enhance decarbonisation and sustainability.
According to the company, MECON has published an RFP for pilot projects, including hydrogen injection in DRI (direct reduced iron) plants and blast furnaces, to improve decarbonisation and sustainability.
"The RfP document has been uploaded in e-tender mode in Tenderwizard, MECON website and in central procurement portal on 11.06.2024 with bid submission date as 08.07.2024," the statement said.
The ministry stated that submissions for their chosen scheme are requested from central public sector firms, state government-owned entities, commercial actors, research institutions, and equipment design and manufacturing companies.
Iron ore (in the form of lumps, pellets, or fines) is directly reduced to iron to create direct reduced iron (DRI), also known as sponge iron. In blast furnaces, hot metal is produced using iron ore and coking coal.
