JSW Steel USA has partnered with Primetals Technologies to enhance the slab casting infrastructure at its Mingo Junction facility in Ohio, USA. The comprehensive project covers steelmaking, secondary metallurgy, and continuous casting processes, aiming to diversify JSW Steel USA's product range for broader market appeal.
The upgrade, slated for completion in the second half of 2025, involves the installation of a 230-tonne vacuum tank degasser (VTD) featuring a dry mechanical vacuum pump system. This VTD, North America’s largest twin-station unit, is expected to facilitate the production of cleaner steel, reducing carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and sulfur levels at various process stages.
Jonathan Shank, Chief Operating Officer at JSW Steel USA - Mingo Junction, emphasised that the project aligns with the company's commitment to sustainability, providing impetus for growth by expanding its product portfolio.
Joerg Buttler, Head of Upstream Business at Primetals Technologies USA, highlighted the collaborative effort with JSW’s Mingo team in designing a custom solution tailored to the plant's space, budget, and metallurgical objectives.
