Nippon Steel’s U.S. unit, U.S. Steel, will invest $350 million to reline Blast Furnace #14 at the Gary Works plant in Indiana, after the company’s board approved full funding for the project. U.S. Steel described the reline as critical maintenance to sustain long-term ironmaking capability and ensure it can continue meeting customer commitments.
Blast Furnace #14 is the largest of four at Gary Works and produces iron used in high-strength steel applications (including automotive and building end-markets). The furnace’s feedstock includes iron ore pellets sourced from U.S. Steel’s Minnesota ore operations.
Alongside the furnace work, the company said upgrades at the hot strip mill and steel shop are progressing and are expected to cost roughly $200 million, with permitting activity underway with Indiana regulators.
Strategically, the capex aligns with Nippon Steel’s broader commitments tied to its acquisition of U.S. Steel, including an $11 billion investment plan through 2028.
