The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a directive exempting renewable energy plants located in special economic zones (SEZs) or export-oriented units (EOUs) from the approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM) requirements as long as they exclusively supply power for green hydrogen production.
This exemption, stated in an office memorandum dated May 27, 2024, is intended to expedite the construction of renewable energy infrastructure required for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives inside these zones.
The action, which is supported by R. K. Singh, Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, is intended to propel major progress in the nation's green hydrogen programmes.
The ALMM regulations, which mandate the compulsory registration of solar PV modules used in Indian projects, have been adjusted to ensure that projects committed to green hydrogen production can proceed without the typical regulatory delays associated with module approval.
The exemption is applicable to all relevant renewable energy projects commissioned by December 31, 2030. This strategic exemption is expected to significantly boost the production capabilities of green hydrogen plants by allowing them to source power more flexibly and cost-effectively, thereby advancing India's clean energy goals and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
