As of February 2, 2024, there are 12,146 operational public EV charging stations across India. The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has been consistently promoting electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. Under the FAME-II scheme, the ministry provides financial support in the form of subsidies for setting up public charging infrastructure, aiming to boost confidence among EV users.
The Ministry of Power has also been proactive in facilitating the deployment of public EV charging infrastructure. They have issued guidelines and standards for EV charging infrastructure, amended at various times, including January 2022, November 2022, and April 2023. These guidelines enable EV owners to charge their vehicles at their residences or offices, prescribe revenue-sharing models for land provision at promotional rates, ensure timely electricity connections to public charging stations (PCS), and set tariff limits for charging services.
Additionally, the Green Energy Open Access Rules 2022 have been notified to further accelerate renewable energy adoption. The "GO ELECTRIC" campaign, launched in February 2021 by the Ministry of Power, aims to raise awareness about the benefits of EVs and electric cooking in India.
The requirement for charging infrastructure varies depending on factors such as EV composition, usage patterns, geography, urbanisation, and technology. While there is no global consensus on the exact number of charging points needed for a certain number of EVs due to these evolving factors, estimates range from 1 charging point per 20 EVs to 1 charging point per 150 EVs.
According to data from the Ministry of Power, the number of operational public EV charging stations by state varies significantly. For example, Delhi has 1,886 operational stations, while smaller states like Meghalaya have fewer.
This information was presented by the Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
