India’s rolled steel imports rose sharply in the first 11 months of FY26, highlighting the gap between fast-growing demand and local supply dynamics. Imports climbed 36.6% year-on-year to 6.02 million tonnes during April 2025 to February 2026, even as domestic steel consumption stayed strong.
At the same time, India’s rolled steel exports fell 37.4% to 5.6 million tonnes, pointing to a market increasingly focused on domestic needs. Steel consumption grew 7.2% year-on-year to 147.7 million tonnes, while production rose 11.2% to 153.61 million tonnes during the same period.
The trend shows India remains a major growth market for steel, with rising infrastructure activity, industrial demand and manufacturing expansion supporting consumption. Even with higher production, import volumes have increased as buyers continue to source material from overseas to meet specific requirements and supply gaps.For the steel trade, the latest numbers underline strong market momentum but also signal pressure on local producers to improve competitiveness, product mix and supply response in a fast-expanding market.
