A delegation from the Steel Executives Association (SEA) has met several Members of Parliament to reiterate its long-standing demand for the merger of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd–Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL–VSP) with the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL).

During meetings held on the sidelines of the ongoing Parliament session, SEA leaders briefed MPs on the financial and operational challenges facing the plant and argued that a merger with SAIL is the most sustainable route to revival. They stressed that integration with SAIL would provide access to captive iron ore, reduce input costs, improve capacity utilisation and restore long-term viability.

The delegation also urged that the steel sector be permanently classified as “strategic”, ensuring continued public-sector presence in a core industry that underpins infrastructure, defence and industrial growth. SEA representatives highlighted the plant’s employment footprint and its role in the regional economy, warning that prolonged uncertainty over its future is affecting morale and talent retention.

MPs who met the delegation are learnt to have responded positively and assured that they would take up the matter with the Union Steel Minister and raise it in Parliament. SEA has said it will continue its outreach with political and policy stakeholders until a concrete decision is taken on the merger issue.
