JSW Steel rises 2% on gas supply worries HSBC raises Tata Steel target to ₹250 British Steel to supply 120,000 mt billet to Nigeria ₹3,200 crore Tata Steel EAF starts in Ludhiana
JSW Energy has commissioned India’s largest green hydrogen plant to supply clean fuel to JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar facility in Karnataka, marking a major step toward the group’s decarbonisation goals.
The plant will supply around 3,800 tonnes of green hydrogen and 30,000 tonnes of green oxygen annually under a seven-year offtake agreement with JSW Steel. The green hydrogen will be used in the mill’s Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) process, helping reduce carbon emissions from steel production.
Built adjacent to the Vijayanagar steel plant, the facility enables direct pipeline transfer, cutting storage and transportation costs while improving efficiency. The project is part of JSW Energy’s allocation under the government’s SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) programme, implemented through SECI.
Looking ahead, the JSW Group plans to scale green hydrogen production to about 85,000–90,000 tonnes per year by 2030, along with 720,000 tonnes of green oxygen, as part of its broader green steel initiative.
The move reinforces JSW’s commitment to low-carbon steelmaking, aligning with global sustainability trends and preparing for regulatory frameworks such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
