Steel Ministry plans Mining Vertical at SAIL.
To manage captive mines and raw material.
Focus on self-reliance and efficiency.
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering India’s domestic raw material security, the Steel Ministry is planning to set up a dedicated Mining Vertical at Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). The proposal, currently in the consultation phase, seeks to streamline the management of the company’s vast mining assets and enhance operational efficiency.
SAIL, one of India’s largest steelmakers, currently operates several iron ore and coal mines across the country, which directly supply raw materials to its integrated steel plants. With rising demands on production and a push for raw material security amid global supply fluctuations, the Steel Ministry believes a specialized mining division could improve resource management, increase production, and reduce dependence on external supplies.
According to ministry sources, the Mining Vertical will function as a distinct operational unit within SAIL, responsible for the exploration, acquisition, and development of mining leases, and will oversee the existing captive mines. This move aligns with the government’s broader focus on self-reliance in critical raw materials and improved supply chain resilience for the steel sector.
An official announcement regarding the framework and leadership of this new vertical is expected in the coming months.
