India–US Trade Tensions Rise Over Steel and Auto Tariffs NMDC Limited reports a 38% drop in Q4 FY24 consolidated net profit RINL to Raise $23 Million Through Land Sales Amid Crisis
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy has said that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth around ₹4,000 crore for reviving the Sir M Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL) at Bhadravati in Karnataka is now ready.
The minister visited the historic plant for the second time and held detailed discussions with senior officials and technical experts on the roadmap for its revival. The proposed investment is aimed at modernising ageing facilities, upgrading technology and restoring sustainable operations at the century-old unit, which has long been battling financial and operational stress.
Kumaraswamy indicated that the revival would be executed in phases, with the DPR outlining priority areas for the initial phase, including critical process upgrades and efficiency improvements. He reiterated the central government’s commitment to bringing VISL back to viability, given its legacy role in Karnataka’s industrialisation and its potential to generate employment and support downstream industries.
The minister’s remarks build on earlier announcements of a larger revival package for Bhadravati, signalling that the project has moved into a more concrete planning stage. Final implementation will depend on internal approvals, budgetary clearances and subsequent execution of the DPR’s recommendations.
