India is building eight new coking coal washeries with a total capacity of 21.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to strengthen domestic supply for the steel industry.
These washeries, located in Jharkhand and West Bengal, are part of the government’s “Mission Coking Coal” initiative launched in August 2021. The facilities include Bhojudih, Patherdih II, New Moonidih, New Kathara, New Rajrappa, Dhori, Basantpur-Tapin, and New Sawang, and are at different stages of construction and tendering.
Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy said the projects will help reduce dependence on imported coking coal by providing cleaner, processed coal to steel plants. The rollout is planned between FY 2025-26 and FY 2029-30.
Since the launch of Mission Coking Coal, India’s coking coal output has grown from 44.79 million tonnes in FY 2020-21 to 66.47 million tonnes in FY 2024-25, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in raw material supply for the steel sector.
