Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have partnered to establish a Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant, marking a major milestone in regional industrial cooperation.
The project is designed to boost raw material processing capacity, reduce reliance on imported steel inputs, and strengthen the region’s position in the global steel supply chain. HBI, a compact form of direct reduced iron (DRI), is a preferred feedstock for electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, known for its efficiency and lower carbon footprint.
The initiative aligns with both countries’ ambitions to expand their metallurgical industries while embracing global trends in green and sustainable steel production. Industry experts note that the collaboration also enhances Eurasian economic ties and supports the creation of export-oriented steel capacities.
