Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has announced that the government aims to raise India’s steel exports tenfold to 50 million tonnes within the next few years. The move comes as part of India’s broader strategy to position itself as a global steel hub while meeting rising international demand for sustainable and high-quality steel.

Speaking at a commerce event, Goyal stressed that India’s steel sector, already the second-largest producer in the world, has the potential to emerge as a global leader with the right mix of capacity expansion, quality improvements, and green steel adoption. He highlighted that the government is working on policy reforms, export incentives, and partnerships to support this ambitious target.

The minister also underlined the importance of value-added products, global certifications, and sustainability standards, noting that these factors will help Indian steelmakers gain wider acceptance in international markets.

Industry analysts believe achieving this export milestone will not only boost foreign exchange earnings but also generate employment and encourage further investments in modern steel plants across the country.
