The Engineering Export Promotion Council of India (EEPC India) has called on the government to include key steel and aluminium products in the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States to ensure fairer market access for Indian exporters.
EEPC India Chairman Pankaj Chadha said that high US tariffs under Section 232—up to 50% on certain items-have reduced the global competitiveness of Indian metal exports, especially for MSME manufacturers. He emphasized that tariff relief should be a key agenda point in the upcoming trade discussions.
The council has also suggested a temporary support mechanism to offset at least 15% of the pricing disadvantage faced by exporters until a long-term policy resolution is reached.
EEPC further urged the government to address similar trade barriers in the EU, including tariff-rate quotas and out-of-quota duties, which continue to restrict India’s metal exports. The body believes that improving access in the US and EU markets is vital to sustaining India’s value-added metal export growth and protecting the interests of small and medium enterprises.
