✔️ AM/NS sues India over raw material import restrictions.
✔️ Claims ₹500 crore annual impact on operations.
✔️ Outcome could affect India’s trade policies and steel industry.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS) has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government over restrictions and delays in raw material imports, escalating a long-standing trade dispute. The company claims that excessive import duties and bureaucratic hurdles have disrupted its production and increased operational costs.
The lawsuit focuses on import restrictions for iron ore and coking coal, which AM/NS argues violate India’s trade agreements and unfairly disadvantage steel producers. "The delays and added costs have made it difficult for us to maintain competitive pricing and meet production targets," an AM/NS spokesperson stated.
The Indian government maintains that the restrictions are necessary to protect domestic producers and ensure resource availability for local manufacturers. However, AM/NS argues that these policies have unfairly targeted its operations and increased costs by over ₹500 crore annually.
Legal experts suggest that the case could have far-reaching implications for India’s trade policies and the steel industry’s competitiveness. The outcome may influence future foreign investments in the sector.
