Aurubis AG, Europe's largest copper producer, has entered into a collaboration with Codelco, the world's leading copper producer based in Chile, to enhance environmentally responsible copper mining practices. The partnership aims to improve the green credentials of the supply chain by implementing sustainable initiatives.
Aurubis CEO Roland Harings stated that the company will provide Codelco with technology and expertise to promote environmentally friendly operations in Chile, focusing on copper smelters. The collaboration envisions over 15 joint projects, with Aurubis offering technical know-how to reduce air and water emissions, assess pollution levels, and enhance health and safety standards.
Among the potential contributions, Aurubis may share technologies from its Hamburg smelter, where low pollution levels have been achieved, allowing operations in a city-centre location. The goal is to leverage Aurubis' experience in reducing the environmental impact of copper production in Europe to support Codelco in adopting sustainable practices.
The collaboration aligns with the broader industry trend of ensuring responsible copper production across the entire supply chain. While EU countries have postponed a decision on legislation requiring large companies to assess the environmental impact of their supply chains, companies like Aurubis aim to demonstrate that sustainable supply chains can be achieved without bureaucratic regulations.
Aurubis did not disclose the financial details of the planned projects. The collaboration comes at a time when the copper industry is increasingly focused on sustainable practices and companies are seeking to contribute to the green energy transition.
