Maharashtra will position itself as a national hub for green steel, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, outlining plans to attract investments in low-carbon steelmaking and advanced materials. The state will prioritise projects that integrate renewable power, natural gas/H2-ready processes, and energy-efficient technologies across both primary and secondary mills.
Fadnavis indicated that the government will work with industry and lenders to enable capex for hydrogen pilots, scrap-based EAF expansions, waste-heat recovery, and carbon capture/readiness. The roadmap also includes cluster-based infrastructure—green power corridors, water & logistics support, and expedited clearances—to lower unit costs for early adopters.
With major consumption centres in automotive, engineering, construction, and renewables, Maharashtra aims to create a domestic market for certified low-carbon steel, helping producers access premium export markets as carbon disclosure norms tighten globally. Skill development and supplier development programs are expected to support MSMEs in the steel value chain.
Officials said the push aligns with India’s broader decarbonisation goals and emerging CBAM-style requirements in key export destinations, positioning Maharashtra to capture new investment and jobs while reducing industrial emissions.
