Reliance's ambitious AI project, Hanooman, backed by business magnate Mukesh Ambani, is on track for a March debut in India, signalling a pivotal moment in the nation's AI ambitions. The initiative, led by a consortium comprising Reliance Industries Ltd. and eight esteemed Indian engineering institutions, recently unveiled the model at a technology conference in Mumbai. Demonstrations at the event showcased Hanooman's versatility, with interactions spanning multiple regional languages and diverse sectors including healthcare, governance, finance, and education.
Named after the revered Hindu deity, Hanooman seeks to serve users in 11 local languages while offering speech-to-text capabilities, thereby improving accessibility for millions of non-literate individuals across India. Developed collaboratively with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) universities and backed by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and the Indian government, the project represents a significant leap forward in India's AI innovation endeavours.
This initiative stands out in a landscape dominated by startups and venture capital-funded ventures focusing on open-sourced AI models tailored specifically for India's requirements. Unlike initiatives led by Silicon Valley giants, BharatGPT's approach integrates both the public and private sectors, leveraging a wide array of expertise and resources.
Ganesh Ramakrishnan, chair of IIT Bombay's computer science and engineering department, likened the collaboration to the concept of an Indian joint family, highlighting the collective strength and mutual reliance among participating entities. Reliance Jio's parallel project, Jio Brain, further underscores the conglomerate's dedication to embedding AI capabilities throughout its extensive subscriber network, emphasising the potential impact of Hanooman.
