Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited (SMEL) has completed the rail infrastructure development at its integrated steel mill in Pandloi, near Rengali in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, in line with the company’s long-term goal of sustainability.

The facility has experienced fast expansion in recent years, recognising the need for improved rail infrastructure to effectively manage the growing flow of raw materials and finished goods. The plant also contains a coal washery and power plant.

The plant used to run on two separate railway lines. According to SMEL’s press release, the recent extension, which was finished in 2023, increased this number to four lines. Moreover, the project, initially approved by the Indian Railways in 2015, now features fully operational overhead electrification.

The plant’s enhanced rail infrastructure now handles over 110 rakes per month. While this is a substantial improvement, according to the company, the current setup can only manage around 60 per cent of the increased demand for raw materials and finished goods.

To address this, SMEL plans to introduce a wagon tippler by 2028. This equipment will further streamline rail operations, doubling the plant’s rail handling capacity and ensuring faster turnaround times for wagons.

Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of SMEL, highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “The expansion of the rail infrastructure is a testament to this commitment, and the planned addition of a wagon tippler by 2028 will further solidify SMEL’s position as a leading player in the steel industry.”
