Mining firm Vedanta Ltd said it is considering legal alternatives, including filing a review appeal, in response to a Supreme Court verdict dismissing its special leave plea challenging the shutdown of the copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi. The Supreme Court rejected the company's request last Thursday to reopen its copper smelting factory in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, which had been shut down since May 2018 due to pollution concerns. The court stressed the significance of the locals' health and welfare in its ruling.
Vedanta had petitioned the Supreme Court for special leave in opposition to the Madras High Court's Division Bench's ruling, which had maintained the closure of the copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi.
"The company is in receipt of the Judgment passed by the Supreme Court on March 05, 2024. The company is exploring possible legal options, including the filing of review petition as per advice from its legal experts," Vedanta Ltd said in an exchange filing. Vedanta Ltd is a diversified natural resources company with interests in oil and gas, aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, silver, iron ore and steel.
