Abhyuday Jindal, managing director of Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL), has urged the Centre to frame a separate national policy for the stainless steel sector, instead of treating it as a single chapter within the revised National Steel Policy 2017.

He argued that stainless steel is fundamentally different from carbon steel in terms of raw materials, applications and production processes, and therefore requires a distinct, targeted framework. According to him, clubbing it under the broader steel policy “diminishes the value and importance” of the industry.

Jindal highlighted stainless steel’s growing role in infrastructure, transport, clean energy, public utilities and manufacturing, and said a dedicated policy could tackle key issues such as underutilised domestic capacity, high production costs, raw material constraints, import pressure and support for MSME fabricators.

Jindal Stainless currently accounts for nearly half of India’s stainless steel sales volume, with around 2.37 million tonnes sold in FY25, largely in the domestic market. Industry leaders believe that a focused stainless steel policy, aligned with long-term national goals, would help India move up the value chain and strengthen its position in global markets.
